The main significance of this piece of jewelry is the belief that wearing it will bring special graces from the Virgin Mary. The medal is also worn by those looking to draw closer to their faith or those experiencing hard times in their personal life.
In 1830, the Blessed Mother as the Immaculate Conception appeared three separate times to St. Catherine Labouré, a member of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul in Paris.Catherine reported that Mary came framed in an oval and standing upon a globe. Rays of light shone from her hands. Around the edge of the oval, these words appeared: O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.
The Virgin instructed her to have a medal struck with her image. “All who wear it will receive great graces”.With the approval of the Archbishop de Quelen of Paris, the first 1,500 medals were struck on June 30, 1832. There was a terrible epidemic of cholera at that time in Paris. The Daughters of Charity began to distribute the first medals.
It is said that the number of cures multiplied, as well as protection from the disease. Because of the numerous favors received by the faithful, the medal was soon known as “miraculous.”
If you are going through a difficult situation or there is simply something that you want with all the strength of your heart, you can pray to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal.
